Reuben Ward Binks

Reuben Ward Binks was born in Halliwell in 1880, and spent his early years at 8 Ralph Street. His father, John Binks, had a watchmaker's business at 3 Blackburn Road.

Although he trained to follow in his father’s footsteps as a watchmaker and optician, Reuben's real passion from childhood was for painting. He received his first box of oil paints from his uncle, Thomas Binks - also a watchmaker - when he was around 8 years old.

The family eventually moved from Bolton to Prestwich and Reuben attended Manchester Grammar School. He studied art at Manchester Art School.

The Countess of Howe commissioned Binks to paint an entire series of her sporting dogs, and it was through her encouragement to specialise in that area (and her considerable social connections) that his career took off.

He painted for many members of the Royal Family, including King Edward VII, Queen Alexandra, George V, Edward VIII and George VI and was frequently invited to attend the Royal Shoots at Sandringham in order to sketch the sporting dogs at work. In 1930 George V presented him with a gift of a signed Van Dyke portrait.

He spent many months in the Punjab, painting for the Maharajah of Patiala, and paid several visits to the USA to work on commissions for prominent American families including the heiress and philanthropist Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge.

His work is widely collected and is still reproduced as prints and posters today. Four of his paintings sold for between £1450 and £4500 each at a specialist auction in San Francisco in April 2004.

He died in 1950.
